Bogota is the capital of Colombia and located at over 2,600 meters it is the largest city of this size at such an altitude. It is located very close to the Equator yet is not particularly hot or humid unlike the coastal areas of Colombia, such as Cartagena and Barranquilla which are in the Caribbean region.
Since being made the capital of the region by the Spanish who controlled the area from around 1538 the city has grown rapidly but at the same time been the scene of much civil unrest as well as suffering from natural disasters such as earthquakes and epidemics which killed many of its citizens.
It has attracted many companies to the city and the headquarters of most businesses of any size in Colombia are found in Bogota, including the headquarters of the banks and the stock exchange in the financial district of the city.
